Naval District Washington Names NAS Patuxent River and NSA Annapolis 2027 Installation Excellence Award Winners
WASHINGTON — Rear Adm. Suzanne M. Bailey, Commandant, Naval District Washington (NDW), announced Naval Air Station Patuxent River and Naval Support Activity Annapolis as the regional winners of the 2027 Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) Installation Excellence Award.
NAS Patuxent River earned top honors in the Large Shore Installation category, while NSA Annapolis captured first place in the Small Shore Installation category. Both commands advance to represent NDW in the upcoming Navy-wide competition, vying against regional champions from across the globe for enterprise honors and potential nomination for the Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence.
"Our installations are the operational launch pads for fleet combat lethality and the foundational communities that sustain our warfighters, civilians, and military families," said Bailey. "Every shore command across our region demonstrated exceptional agility, mission readiness, and unyielding dedication this past year. The competition was incredibly close, but the remarkable performance of Team Pax River and Team Annapolis truly set the enterprise standard for shore excellence. I am extraordinarily proud of their leadership and look forward to them representing Naval District Washington on the Navy-wide stage."
The annual Installation Excellence Award recognizes outstanding performance across core mission pillars, including base operating support, facilities management, energy and environmental stewardship, quality of life, force protection, safety, and community partnerships.
NAS Patuxent River, commanded by Capt. Robert H. Chandler, distinguished itself through sustained, high-tempo support to 65 mission partners, major airfield and electrical infrastructure resilience projects, and top-tier quality-of-life programs serving warfighters and families across Southern Maryland.
NSA Annapolis, commanded by Capt. LaDonna Simpson, excelled in its mission enabling the development of future fleet leaders at the U.S. Naval Academy, managing more than 120 historic structures, executing vital coastal resilience initiatives, and achieving benchmark ratings in energy conservation, unaccompanied housing satisfaction, and emergency services.
Navy-wide winners will be announced later this year by CNIC. Headquartered at the historic Washington Navy Yard, Naval District Washington (NDW) serves as the regional provider of common operating support for naval installations throughout the National Capital Region. Spanning more than 4,000 square miles across the District of Columbia, northern Virginia, and Maryland counties, NDW efficiently delivers essential support services to over 120 mission commands within its jurisdiction. Installations within the region include Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, Naval Support Activity Bethesda, Naval Support Activity South Potomac, and Naval Support Activity Washington.
