A Different Kind of Crossing Takes Shape on Virginia Road

A low-water crossing on Virginia Road has a new look - and a different kind of construction underneath it.

Franklin County Public Works crews recently replaced the crossing north of Marshall Road using ArmorFlex, an engineered system made of interconnected concrete blocks that form large, flexible mats.

The previous crossing was in poor condition and had deteriorated beyond the point where a simple repair would solve the problem. Replacing it gave the County an opportunity to use a system designed specifically for areas where water regularly crosses a roadway.

Unlike a traditional solid concrete slab, ArmorFlex uses individual concrete blocks connected by cables. The system creates a stable driving surface while helping protect the gravel and road base underneath from erosion and washouts. The connected mats are designed to withstand flowing water and stay in place better than loose rock or gravel, helping reduce maintenance after high-water events.

Crews prepared and graded the site before placing a protective fabric underneath the mats. The large concrete mats were then lowered into place using a crane.

The project came together with assistance from Welborn Sales and Thane Bush, who worked with Franklin County Public Works on the ArmorFlex solution and helped support the project from planning through installation.

In all, the new crossing uses approximately 1,120 square feet of ArmorFlex, providing a more durable, stable crossing for motorists while helping protect the roadway where water naturally needs to pass.
