Three sheriff’s deputies in Virginia get harmed in shooting

(MENAFN) Three sheriff’s deputies in Virginia were wounded on Wednesday while attempting to serve warrants to a local resident, according to officials. The suspect was arrested after an extended standoff with law enforcement.

The incident occurred in Gretna, Pittsylvania County, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving medics, firefighters, and multiple police agencies, as seen in footage circulating online.

Early confirmation came from a US lawmaker, who stated that multiple officers had been hurt. “My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies who were shot in Pittsylvania County, as well as their families. We are closely following the situation and keeping everyone affected in our hearts during this difficult time,” the official wrote on social media.

At a later press briefing, local authorities explained that the shooting took place when deputies attempted to serve the suspect — identified as James Andreu Lehnerd — with a protective order and warrants related to brandishing a firearm and trespassing. According to the sheriff, the officers were met with gunfire and sustained minor shrapnel injuries.

One deputy was hospitalized “out of an abundance of caution,” the sheriff noted. “All three are well. Of course they’re shaken up. And they’re going through the process now of trying to heal,” he said.

The confrontation led to a standoff lasting several hours before the suspect surrendered. Officials said he will face “serious” charges, which are still being finalized.
